Athletic Events

Gillis School Students compete in a number of athletic events throughout the year.
Cross Country
Beginning in September, students in grade 3-6 will begin training for the the grade 3-5 cross country meet traditionally held at Birds Hill Park in the beginning of October. Simultaneously the grade 6 runners will also start training for their meet which usually occurs the second week of October at Pope's Hill in Birds Hill Park. All students are invited to participate and enjoy representing Gillis School.
Triple Ball
Triple ball is essentially volleyball adapted for middle years students. This season occurs in January and February. Our grade 5 students have previously travelled to Beausejour for a single day tournament with the students from Ecole Beausejour Elementary School. Meanwhile our grade 6 students attend a tournament held in either Oakbank or Dugald where they will compete against teams from Oakbank, Beausejour, Dugald, and Anola.
Badminton
Badminton practice begins right after spring break, giving students approximately five weeks to prepare for the middle years (Grade 6-8) Sunrise South Divisional tournament. Teams that place in the top two at this tournament will have the opportunity to move on to divisional cross-over play where they will have an opportunity to compete with top teams for the north side of the division as well.
Track
Our middle years track team starts practicing as soon as the school yard is dry enough for them to get out there running, throwing, and jumping. The tournament traditionally takes place in early-mid June at the Selkirk Comp track.
LOGS
LOGS stands for Low Organized GameS and it consists of various lead up games that develop skills for future competitions. LOGS happens during morning recess for grade 1-6 students with grade 1 attending on Monday, 2 on Tuesday etc. The games are led by out PE teacher with support for grade 5/6 gym helpers.
